Course Highlight: Negotiation Strategies and Skills (GMBA7120)

Negotiations are happening all the time in our working environment and our daily life. Negotiation Strategies and Skills course objectives were 1. to increase students’ awareness about negotiation complexity; 2. provide techniques to make better deals and 3. dealing efficiently with tensions, differences, and conflicts.

This is a new intensive weekend course just launched this semester and it included 4 interactive simulations. Given different scenarios, students were divided into groups and practiced negotiation strategies with each other. This course was instructed by Prof Ta-wei Chao, who is now a senior fellow of ESSEC Irene and has been the Executive Director of ESSEC Irene Asia. Professor Chao added cross-cultural elements to cater to GMBA’s diverse group of students. Through the interactive simulations, students learned not only during the lecture but also from each other. To understand the cultural background of each student was an important key to success as it affected the outcome of each scenario. Students were so delighted with the course since negotiation skills are used for a lifetime, whether it is at work, or at home.

Empowering GMBA students on
career path: LinkedIn workshop

It goes without saying, but networking is one of the most essential aspects of every MBA, and it also plays a crucial role in landing a full-time role after graduation. In this two-hour intensive workshop hosted by Professor Garvi and one of our very own GMBA student (and former LinkedIn employee) Jonathan Brown, we explored different aspects of LinkedIn. We were introduced to the basic functions of Linkedin and how to effectively use LinkedIn. Jonathan suggested how to redesign our profiles to make it more powerful and optimize our profiles for increased visibility to recruiters.

What’s more important, GMBA is going to use LinkedIn to strengthen our network! We are proactively inviting our alumni to join the GMBA LinkedIn group, but in case you did not receive an invitation, please click on the following link and join us:

Within the group, please feel free to share job vacancies that you may know or share your job hunting tips with our current students!

GMBA Outdoor Activities

Don’t you know that we had a GMBA Basketball team before?  We also competed in NTU sports day!  Although we may not have a basketball team now, but a group of alumni who are keen on basketball are still having regular practices!  Come and practice with them if you are also a basketball fan!

Weekend warriors are a group of hiking fans including both current students and alumni, and they go hiking during weekends. They have various tracks and both beginners and experts may join. If you would like to see the beautiful scenery of Taiwan from a different angle, you cannot miss this.

If you would like to join the above activities, please contact Christy at christychiu@ntu.edu.tw or Line ID: christychiu.

GMBA Alumni Interview: Anna Sheng, Class of 2017

Brief Introduction of Anna Sheng

Anna is a local from Shanghai.  Her friends from other places or countries came to Shanghai to study and work, but she never went out of Shanghai for further study or living outside before.  Around 5 years’ working, she felt her life was boring and full of everydayness.  So a friend from Taiwan recommended NTU as a turning point.  She was very surprised to know that she was the only student from Mainland in GMBA in the same term!  Holding the excitement and curiosity, she started her two and half years’ journey of life and study in NTU and Kyoto University.

Q1. After finishing your Dual degree in Kyoto University, what are you doing now?  Is this the same career path before you come to Taiwan?

I am now working as a legal supervisor in an online education technology company, whose founder is very coincidently from Taiwan. There seems to be the destiny that ties me and Taiwan together.

From a lawyer to a legal advisor in a startup company, the career path in the legal field seems alike, but different in standpoint now, thanks to the experience of MBA in both NTU and KU.
