In research, a NTU Department of Electrical Engineering research team won first place in the IEEE clock network synthesis contest; in fact, the NTU team was the only team in the world to win both the global routing arrangement contest and the clock network synthesis contest. Institute of Oceanography Associate Professor Chih-hao Hsieh’s research findings in his study of the impact of environmental changes on ocean fish made gloriously to the pages of "Nature/Highlights," Department of Economics Associate Professor Chen-Ying Huang cracked the code of deliberation vs. intuition, and her paper was the first from Taiwan on a economic subject published in "Science", Department of Geosciences Associate Professor Dr. Yih-min Wu received wide international attention for his study of early earthquake warning signs, which has led to significant reductions of life and property loss caused by large earthquakes, and a NTU team collaborated with a team from Academia Sinica to make a major breakthrough in anti-cancer research: they discovered that a neo mimic DNA protein related to the shrimp white spot syndrome virus was effective in killing cancer cells. Altogether, the research achievements of NTU faculty members and their research teams and graduate assistants were abundant and meritorious, as evidenced in the fact that in the 2009 ESI tally NTU ranked 65th in the world in number of theses published and that NTU topped all academic institutions in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China in number of theses cited. For their part, NTU students excelled both in academic performance and athletics. 

At last year’s National Intercollegiate Sports Meet, NTU students garnered 86 medals (40 golds, 27 silvers, and 19 bronzes), and our athletes reigned supreme in the swimming contests. The debate team from the NTU College of Law won the championship in the Asian Regional Moot Court Competition, and the NTU Model UN Club Organizes a Team to Participate in the 2009 World Model UN Conference. Additionally, NTU has become the most important place for the study of the European Union and bilateral civilian exchange in the Chinese speaking world, since the NTU European Union Center was set up at our Hsiu-chou Rd. campus. For promoting Cultural Exchange and Integration, NTU launched the Global Lounge and the International Week as Platforms for enhancing a sense of Belonging for Foreign Students while broadening the international perspectives of local students. Last but not least, the “university/industry cooperative R&D building” at our Chu-bei branch school and the “pharmaceutical science and technology building” at our College of Public Health held ground breaking ceremonies on the same day. When completed, these two new buildings are expected to spur the development of the Hsin-chu area, as well as promote the development of pharmaceutical bio-technology.
