Editor's Note

This present issue has many honors and research achievements of NTU faculty members which we would like to share with NTU alumni. The special report of this issue focuses on the New Energy Center of NTU, as it has recently won the much coveted “Global Research Partnership Award” from Saudi Arabia. This is the only non-Abrabian university from Asia to win this award.

In the “Honor” column, we would like to share with our alumni the recent international academic honors won by NTU faculty members. Professor Chu-yung Lin of the Institute of Plant Biology, College of Life Sciences became a life corresponding member of the American Society of Plant Biologists in May, 2008. He was the only Taiwanese scholar to have won this honor to date! Dr. Kai-feng Chen of the Physics Department, on the other hand, won the IUPAP Young Scientist Award in Particle Physics.

In this issue’s “Research Achievements” column, we introduce four new findings by our faculty members. Associate Professor Chih-hao Hsieh from the Institute of Oceanography joined an international research team whose research findings were published in the April issue of “Nature” magazine. The High Energy Research Team from NTU participated in the Belle Experiment of the KEK Lab of Japan, and had a research paper published in the latest issue of “Nature.” In addition, the research team led by Professor Tzu-ming Pan of the Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology discovered that the fermented products of Monascus possessed anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory functions and could be used as an effective inhibitor of Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Hsueh-Fen Juan of the Department of Life Sciences, on the other hand, first discovered that blocking key energy protein enzyme could effectively inhibit the growth of cancer cells!

NTU’s Professor Emeritus Dr. Chu-Yung Lin Is the First Taiwan Scholar to Become Life Corresponding Member of American Society of Plant Biologists

On May 17th, Professor Chu-yung Lin of the Institute of Plant Biology, College of Life Sciences won the Life Corresponding Membership Award from the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB). Established in 1932, the Award annually recognized outstanding plant biologists who live outside the United States for their academic achievements. As a rule, the recipients of this Award may not make up more than two percent of the total dues-paying members of the Society. Professor Lin is the first person from Taiwan to have won this honor...>>Full Text

Dr. Kai-feng Chen from NTU’s College of Sciences wins the Prestigious IUPAP Young Scientist Award in Particle Physics

Dr. Kai Feng Chen wins IUPAP’s (International Union of Pure and Applied Physics) inaugural Young Scientist Award owing to his prominent and innovative analysis of B meson decays with the Belle experiment at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan. Among them was the very important measurement of time-dependent charge parity violation in b to s transitions and polarization measurements in B-decays...>>Full Text
