The arrival of June spelled another graduation season at NTU.  For the long-term, President Lee expects our graduates to become outstanding world class talents who are devoted to working for the betterment of humankind and solving the serious problems that face human civilization today.  At the same time, he hopes that those in power will continue to support NTU’s development, especially now that NTU has entered the ranks of the world’s top 100 universities, so we may continue our ascent and extend these past “Golden Five Years” into “Golden Ten Years.”
 
Regarding internationalization, we have achieved significant results.  For example, the annual meeting of ASAIHL 2010 (Association of Southeast Asian Higher Education) was held April 16-19 at NTU’s GIS Convention Center.  Showcasing the theme, “Higher Education: Engaging Knowledge Economy,” the Conference stirred new thinking about the key issues of higher education in Southeast Asia.  This was the first time that the ASAIHL Conference was held in Taiwan, and the NTU Office of International Affairs made sure the event proceeded smoothly.  The meeting was a resounding success, as a record 111 delegates from 64 universities in 15 nations were in attendance. 

At the meeting of the board of trustees of APAIE (Asia-Pacific Association for International Education) held in Seoul, Korea in late 2009, NTU defeated over twenty other universities to secure the right to host the 2011 APAIE Conference. Then, in mid-April, 2010, President Si-Chen Lee traveled to Australia to attend the 2010 APAIE Conference and oversee the transfer of the hosting rights. At the Conference, he heartily welcomed the conference-goers to come to Taiwan next year.  Later in April, NTU set up the “APAIE Special Project Office,” responsible for making all preparations for hosting the 2011 APAIE annual Conference—which will be held in the NTU Sports Center March 9-11, 2011. The Conference theme will be “Asia Pacific Education: Impacting the World,” with various related sub-topic panels as well as veritable marketplace of university booths.  It is anticipated that 800 delegates from 400 universities in 50 countries will attend the 20100 APAIE Conference, stirring new impetus for higher education exchange and cooperation. 

As to honors, the NTU College of Management was accredited by AACSB, and thereby formally recognized as a world class business school. This year, thirty College of Management professors won the Outstanding Research Award from National Science Council.  This number was over 1/3 of the total College of Management faculty, a new high. And, our students won numerous trophies in various sporting events at the National Collegiate Sports Meet. Notably, our Rugby Team won the National Championship.

As to research, our high energy physics team participated activately in the Large Hardon Collider experiment conducted by the European Particle Physics Research center to explore new physical phenomena of the universe.  And, NTU medical researchers achieved several outstanding results.  For example, the advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic team successfully completed splenectomy surgery, and NTU Hospital signed on to the “OncoNet Cancer Drug Research Project” with the American company, Merck Pharmaceuticals, to jointly develop new anti-cancer drugs.
